Tougher punishments for exam paper leaks were passed by India’s lower House of Parliament on Wednesday, following the resignation of the education minister due to youth-led protests calling for extensive reforms. The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 was approved by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday by a voice vote. The law increases the maximum fine to over $1 million and doubles the possible jail sentence to ten years for individuals who leak exam papers. According to India’s state television, MPs approved it by voice vote.
This bill, which aims to alter the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, was approved following a heated debate that lasted several hours over two days. Through stronger legislative requirements, the proposed amendment seeks to improve the examination system’s transparency and integrity while guaranteeing that students’ futures are completely safeguarded. Strict penalties, such as up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to Rs 10 crore ($1 million), the seizure of assets of those found guilty, and the creation of a system to guarantee verdicts are rendered within three months, are some of the main characteristics.
