Minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad in western India, an Air India jet carrying 242 passengers headed for London crashed on Thursday, according to the company and authorities. India’s federal health minister said that “many people” were dead.

According to Air India, the aircraft was its route to Gatwick Airport in Britain; however, authorities said that it crashed in a residential neighbourhood close to the airport. A senior police official informed reporters, “The building on which it crashed is a doctors’ hostel… we have cleared almost 70% to 80% of the area and will clear the rest soon.

According to aviation tracking website Flightradar24, the aircraft was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, one of the newest passenger planes in operation. Air India stated on X, “At this time, we are determining the details and will share further updates.” The injured are being treated at the closest hospitals.

According to media stations, the disaster happened shortly after the jet took off. Before a massive jet of flames rose into the sky from beyond the houses, one channel showed the plane taking off over a residential area and then vanishing from the screen.

Additionally, images showed burning debris and dense black smoke billowing into the sky close to the airport. They also depicted persons being transported in ambulances and carried on stretchers.
