WeRide, a multinational autonomous driving technology business, announced the launch of fully autonomous commercial robotaxi operations in Abu Dhabi, the first city outside the United States and the first in the Middle East to operate fully autonomous vehicles on the Uber platform.
Thanks to WeRide and Uber’s continued collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Integrated Transport Center (ITC) and fleet operator Tawasul, this milestone marks a significant step toward the growth of autonomous transportation solutions in the UAE.
Initially, on Yas Island, public commercial operations have begun without a specialist on board the autonomous cars. Users of the Uber app can order UberX or Uber Comfort rides in Abu Dhabi using either the new autonomous product or a WeRide autonomous car.
The federal government authorized WeRide’s robotaxis to conduct completely autonomous commercial operations in October 2025. The ITC then awarded the first commercial operating license for a fully autonomous robotaxi fleet in Abu Dhabi to WeRide and Tawasul. WeRide and Tawasul will work together to manage the first phase through the Uber platform.
