On Monday, the foreign minister of Qatar warned that maritime channels should not be used as “bargaining tools” and advised Iran and the United States to actively participate in mediation efforts. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the premier and foreign minister of Qatar, “stressed the importance of all parties responding positively to the ongoing mediation efforts,” during a conversation with Abbas Araghchi.According to a statement issued by the foreign ministry, “He also emphasized the need to open maritime routes, guarantee freedom of navigation, and refrain from using them as a tool for pressure or bargaining.”

Despite worldwide appeals for a ceasefire to be respected and negotiations to resume, US President Donald Trump threatened to destroy any Iranian attack boats that approach the naval blockade he has imposed around the nation’s ports. The US military stated that the blockade would start at 1400 GMT and apply to all ships departing or attempting to dock at Iranian harbors; however, after the deadline passed, neither a statement nor any indication of any interceptions were made. Trump stated on social media that the majority of Iran’s fleet had already been destroyed during the conflict, but that “they will be immediately ELIMINATED” if any of what he claimed to be Tehran’s few remaining “fast attack ships” approach the blockade.
