During the G20 Trade and Investment Ministerial Meeting (TIMM) in Brazil, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade Dr. Thani Bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi reiterated the UAE’s commitment to open, rules-based trade and argued that WTO reform can promote multilateralism and guarantee fair access to global supply chains for all countries. Brazil’s G20 Presidency included the UAE as an invited visitor, demonstrating the UAE’s increasing sway over the world economy, especially in relation to trade matters.

Al Zeyoudi spoke in two crucial sessions about the global trade system during the summit, which will influence the results of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in November 2024: the first focused on WTO reform and the necessity of fortifying the multilateral trading system. In his ministerial interventions, Al Zeyoudi said that the decisions made at the World Trade Organization’s 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13) in February 2024, which resulted in the Abu Dhabi Declaration, were a significant advancement in crucial areas like dispute resolution and needed to be put into effect right away. In addition to pushing back against protectionism, which will impede global growth and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, he urged the G20 to reaffirm its commitment to free, rules-based commerce as an engine of growth and prosperity.
