For a Second Day, Deadly Russian Strikes Batter Ukraine

Following a second night of intense strikes throughout the war-torn country, Russia launched a barrage of attack drones and missiles at Ukraine, killing at least five people, according to authorities on Tuesday.

Soon after the bombardment began, Ukraine announced that it had made significant progress in its surprise attack on the Russian border region of Kursk and that it had captured almost 600 Russian soldiers over the previous three weeks.

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on social media on Tuesday that there could not be crimes against humanity committed with impunity and that 16 people had been injured. Four people had died. Authorities said one woman later passed away in a hospital.

AFP reporters in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, heard an explosion probably caused by air defence systems during the night, along with the sound of air raid sirens echoing over the city.

Moscow launched one of its biggest attacks on Ukraine to date on Monday, which prompted Kyiv to ask for permission from its allies to use weapons supplied by the West to launch an attack deep inside Russia.

In addition to declaring that Ukraine had successfully tested a ballistic missile made domestically, Zelensky stated in Kyiv that Ukraine had used F-16 fighter jets supplied by the West to counter the Russian barrage.
