According to a preliminary count by police, mishaps connected to the potent fireworks that Germany typically set off to celebrate the new year resulted in five fatalities throughout the country and the serious injury of one police officer.

Germans use fireworks exceptionally heavily to celebrate the new year, which leads to ongoing discussions about banning the most potent pyrotechnics due to the high number of accidents they cause annually and the noise and pollution they produce. According to police spokesman Florian Nath, 13 law enforcement officers were hurt in the accidents this year, one of them critically.

In the northwest part of North Rhine-Westphalia, close to Paderborn, a 24-year-old man died after setting off a pyrotechnic rocket. Local police suspect the man manufactured the device himself.

When a 45-year-old man in Oschatz, Saxony, set fire to a “pyrotechnic bomb,” he suffered severe head injuries and died. The police claimed it was a strong F4 category firework, which can only be purchased with a special permit.

According to a police spokesperson, a 50-year-old man in the town of Hartha in the same eastern part of Saxony died instantly from head injuries sustained while attempting to ignite a pyrotechnic pipe bomb.
