Amidst a severe heatwave, firefighters in Spain reported discovering two dead following a fire in the country’s northeast. This week’s heatwave in Europe set high-temperature records, forced schools to close, and increased the risk of fire.

Two wildfires that started nearly simultaneously in the province of Lerida in Spain’s Catalonia region forced over 14,000 residents to stay indoors on Tuesday. The fire and rescue service stated in a statement that “two people were found lifeless by firefighters” in one of the fires near the city of Cosco.

During Monday’s heat wave in France, people are sitting in the shade beneath a bridge that spans the Seine River in Paris. AFP A two-year-old kid had died after being left in a parked car in the sun for many hours, according to authorities in the area hours earlier.

With temperatures in numerous locations over 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and multiple heat records established for the month of June, Spain is now experiencing an extreme heatwave.

While doing road construction on Saturday, two people—one in Barcelona and the other in the southern city of Cordoba—died, most likely from heatstroke.
