During an embarrassing event at the White House, Donald Trump seemed unable to clasp a Medal of Honor. The US President appeared to fumble with the ends of the medal’s blue ribbon for over forty seconds before simply putting the medal securely around the neck of veteran Major Nicholas Dockery, according to a video sent to Bluesky. The president is seen speaking in the footage, but it’s unclear what he said to Major Dockery because his voice is muffled. The room erupted in anxious laughter when he finally attached the medal.
The greatest military award available is the Medal of Honor. According to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, it is awarded to a soldier who “distinguishes himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty.” At least two eyewitness accounts of the recipient’s outstanding valor must be provided in order for them to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Dockery is an Indiana special forces man and a highly decorated combat hero. He was working in Afghanistan’s Kapisa Province in 2012 to prevent the Taliban from attacking a meeting between Afghan and US leaders.
Dockery fled through enemy gunfire to defend his colleagues when Taliban insurgents ambushed Afghan and American forces close to the conference. Then, by placing himself between a fellow soldier and a grenade, re-exposing himself to enemy fire to save two missing comrades, and doing CPR on a soldier who was not breathing, he saved numerous lives. “Dockery’s ability to repel multiple enemy attacks was the deciding factor that saved the lives of his fellow American and Afghan soldiers on the ground,” the US Army stated. He and the US Army both deserve a tremendous deal of praise for his efforts, which are consistent with the highest standards of military bravery, valor, daring, and gallantry.
