Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has implemented the newest LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology to improve the accuracy of data utilised in digital twin platforms and evaluate the state of road assets. The program encourages the creation of proactive, predictive, and preventive maintenance plans. It highlights RTA’s ongoing initiatives to incorporate cutting-edge smart technologies into road asset management and upkeep, guaranteeing the sustainability of the road network and enhancing traffic safety throughout the Emirate.

“LiDAR technology offers a remarkable boost in performance and speed, delivering up to 300% compared to traditional visual inspections,” stated Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency. This development demonstrates RTA’s commitment to utilizing state-of-the-art technology and speeding up digital transformation to improve Dubai’s road infrastructure’s quality while preserving its effectiveness, durability, and long-term viability. The project aligns with the leadership’s goal of making Dubai a globally recognized smart and sustainable metropolis.

Al Banna went on to say that compared to traditional methods, LiDAR offers superior accuracy and speed in evaluating the condition of road assets, delivering up to 95% accuracy. As a result, it helps improve the data quality and makes maintenance decisions more intelligent and effective. To increase road safety and lower the hazards involved with manual inspections, the technology also makes it possible to safely and effectively inspect elevated assets along highways and major roads, such as road signs, traffic signals, and lighting poles.
