Actor and singer Dolly Parton and action movie star Tom Cruise are two of the celebrities honoured with this year’s honorary Oscars for their lifetime accomplishments, the Hollywood Film Academy said Tuesday. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts Sciences’ board of governors also chose production designer Wynn Thomas and actor and choreographer Debbie Allen for honour.
Due to his decades of work in Risky Business, two Top Gun films, and other films, Cruise was chosen to feature in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. For Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, he received two nominations for best actor, and for Magnolia, he received one for best supporting actor.
“We have all been inspired by Tom Cruise’s amazing dedication to our filmmaking community, the theatrical experience, and the stunts community,” Academy President Janet Yang said in a statement.
For her humanitarian work, country music artist and Steel Magnolias star Parton will be given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. According to the organization’s website, Parton’s Imagination Library has given away more than 284 million books to kids over the age of thirty. For the movies 9 to 5 and Transamerica, she was nominated for two Oscars for best song.
