According to a person familiar with the situation, Air India has been requested by Canada’s transportation regulator to look into an incident when a pilot reported for duty while intoxicated and failed two breathalyser tests.
The individual added that when the pilot was asked to exit the aircraft, Canadian authorities conducted the tests at Vancouver International Airport.According to the person, Transport Canada called the event a “serious matter” in a letter to Air India, and authorities are probably going to take enforcement action.
Air India confirmed in a statement that the event caused a last-minute delay to the December 23 Vancouver-to-Delhi flight. The statement also stated that an alternate pilot was brought in to handle the flight.
While the investigation is underway, the pilot has been removed from flying duties. “Any violation of applicable rules and regulations is met with zero tolerance by Air India,” the airline stated. Any confirmed infraction will result in severe disciplinary action in accordance with corporate policy, pending the conclusion of the investigation.
