As families regain control over tech companies, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese applauded the world’s first social media ban for children under 16 that went into force on Wednesday. However, he cautioned that the implementation would be challenging. When the historic law went into effect, parents complained that their children were upset to learn they had been barred from platforms.

Some young children reported using drawings of facial hair to trick the platforms’ age estimation technologies. It is also expected that parents and older siblings will assist certain children in overcoming these limitations. Albanese told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that “this is the day when Australian families are taking back power from these big tech companies and they’re asserting the right of kids to be kids and for parents to have greater peace of mind.

Letting Australian children enjoy their youth. Allowing Australian parents to feel more at ease. Additionally, the international community is observing Australia and wondering, “Well, if Australia can do it, why can’t we?” Later, Albanese spoke to a group of reformers in Sydney, including parents who attribute a child’s suicide on social media. If Facebook, Instagram, Kick, Reddit, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, X, YouTube, and Twitch do not take appropriate action to delete the accounts of Australian children under the age of sixteen, they might be fined up to 49.5 million Australian dollars ($32.9 million) starting on Wednesday.
