According to law enforcement officials, an explosion at the Biscailuz Training Center of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in East Los Angeles on Friday claimed the lives of at least three officers. The explosion happened at 7:30 a.m. at the Eastern Avenue center, which houses the bomb squad and the sheriff’s special enforcement bureau as well as the arson explosive detail.
During a press conference on Friday morning, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna stated that the three officers were all part of the arson explosives detail and had been with the department for 19 to 33 years. Unfortunately, since 1857, this has been the biggest death toll for the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, Luna stated.
Two law enforcement officials said preliminary evidence suggests that when the explosion happened, deputies were transporting an unexploded ordnance that had just been recovered from a bomb callout. The sources emphasized that the inquiry is still under progress.
Luna emphasized Friday morning that there were no more injuries, despite law enforcement officials first telling The Times that a fourth person had been hurt. Luna claimed to have communicated with two of the families of the three deputies who were slain, although they have not been recognised.
