On Wednesday, Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir visited the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem’s Old City, prompting fierce condemnation from Arab nations and Hamas. In a statement, the Saudi foreign ministry expressed “strongest condemnation” of Ben Gvir’s “storming” of the property.

Egypt likewise stated “its total condemnation and denunciation” of Ben Gvir’s “storming of the blessed Al Aqsa Mosque under the protection of Israeli police.

Jordan, the site’s keeper, criticised Wednesday’s visit as “storming” and “an outrageous provocation” in a foreign ministry statement. According to Hamas, the visit was “part of the ongoing genocide against our Palestinian people” and was a “provocative and dangerous escalation”.

We urge our Palestinian people and youth in the West Bank to escalate their conflict… in defence of our land and sanctuaries, most notably the blessed Al Aqsa Mosque,” it added in a statement. On Wednesday, Turkey slammed the visit, saying it will increase regional tensions.

We condemn the Israeli government’s raid on the Al Aqsa Mosque compound today,” the foreign ministry said in a statement. This choice by (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu’s allies is a risky one that will exacerbate regional tensions.
