NEW YORK: After President Donald Trump rejected a new proposal from Tehran, Russia’s foreign ministry on Saturday urged implementation of the US-Iran memorandum of agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
At a press conference that Arab News attended on the fringes of the UN General Assembly in New York, Sergey Lavrov described the June Memorandum of Understanding negotiated by Pakistan as “a fair deal, an honest deal.”
And why not go back to it since it was signed at the highest level and this was done in an informed manner? Energy markets are under pressure as a result of the US-Iran conflict, which started in February. Tehran has blocked the crucial Hormuz Strait, and the allied Houthi militia in Yemen is still attacking Red Sea maritime lines.
Shortly after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi presented the plan at the UN in New York on Friday, Trump rejected it. Although the proposal’s specifics have not been disclosed, rumours state that it calls for the release of frozen Iranian assets valued at least $12 billion and the suspension of regional hostilities.
According to reports, it also include removing the US naval blockade of Iran’s ports and relaxing restrictions on the country’s oil. According to Araghchi, Qatari mediators communicated the idea to the US and called for “certain actions” from Washington.
