According to officials, a local parliament building in the province capital of Indonesia was set on fire by an enraged crowd, resulting in at least three fatalities and five injuries. Late Friday marked the start of the fire in the capital of South Sulawesi province, Makassar. The provincial council building caught fire overnight, according to television sources, turning the surrounding area a spooky orange. Three fatalities were recovered by rescuers on Saturday morning. At the same time, five individuals who had jumped from the building were sent to the hospital with burns or broken bones, according to local disaster administrator Fadli Tahar.

On Friday, protesters in Bandung, West Java, also set fire to a provincial parliament; however, no one was hurt. After demolishing fences and setting cars on fire, demonstrators broke into the regional police headquarters in Surabaya, the second-largest city in Indonesia. Demonstrators retaliated with pyrotechnics and wooden clubs after security personnel deployed water cannons and tear gas.

US, Australian, and Southeast Asian embassies in Jakarta have advised their citizens to avoid protest sites and large public gatherings. As officials cleaned up burned-out automobiles, police buildings, and bus shelters that were set on fire by irate protestors, the capital of Indonesia saw a significant return to calm on Saturday.
