Prince Harry was subjected to a long-running and targeted campaign by the Daily Mail after challenging what he described as repeated intrusions into his private life, his lawyer told the High Court on Tuesday.

The Duke of Sussex, 41, along with six other high-profile figures including musician Elton John, is suing Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail. The claim alleges serious privacy violations spanning more than two decades, from the early 1990s onward.

According to the lawsuit, journalists used unlawful methods such as hacking voicemail messages, bugging landlines and obtaining private information through deception, a practice commonly known as blagging.

Associated Newspapers has strongly denied the allegations, describing them as defamatory and insisting its reporting was based on legitimate sources, including information from the claimants’ social circles.

Harry’s lawyer, David Sherborne, told the court that the prince was one of the most commercially valuable figures for Britain’s tabloid press due to intense public interest in the royal family. He said coverage of Harry often focused in an intrusive and harmful way on his personal relationships, particularly those before he met his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.

Sherborne highlighted 14 articles at the centre of the case, including reports about Harry potentially becoming godfather to his former nanny’s child, details of his travel plans and deeply personal information about his past relationship with Chelsy Davy.
