At Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport, a drone sighting and the finding of a suspicious device caused aircraft disruptions during the night, and one runway remained blocked on Wednesday, according to police. An anti-explosives robot was sent to investigate an object near the airport’s south runway shortly before midnight, according to authorities, and several flights, including one passenger plane, were diverted to neighboring airports.
They didn’t go into detail. The south runway was still closed on Wednesday morning, however flights utilizing the other runway started up again just before two in the morning. A drone was discovered at the airport, according to German Interior Ministry spokeswoman Leonard Kaminski, who declined to provide further details due to the ongoing investigation. He declined to comment on accusations in German media that it was seen close to a Ukrainian aircraft and that it had a detonator and potential bombs attached. According to him, a plane that was scheduled to land at Leipzig/Halle broke from its approach, allegedly struck something, and landed at Hannover, another airport in Germany. Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft are among the aircraft at the airport, which is a significant center for cargo.
Western security officials believe Russian intelligence was involved in a plot in 2024 when an incendiary device set fire to a freight container at an airport logistics center. The scheduled flight was postponed. Kaminski stated he doesn’t currently see any direct relation to the overnight incident when asked.
