Abu Dhabi: A 24-year-old Emirati man who weighed 120 kg shed 35 kg following robotic-assisted bariatric surgery at an Abu Dhabi hospital. The team at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) used state-of-the-art surgical equipment that provides doctors with a computer-guided, magnified 3D image, enabling less invasive surgeries with smaller incisions. Thin robotic arms allow surgeons to execute surgeries more precisely and accurately.
Abdulla Alqattan, who struggled with morbid obesity and had a BMI of about 42, is now at peace following surgery and post-operative care. This led to a weight loss of 35 kg in just four months. I am happy and grateful that the hospital and doctors offer this state-of-the-art equipment. “After the surgery, I can live a more normal life,” Alqattan, who now weighs 85 kg, told Gulf News.
When Alqattan originally arrived at the hospital, he had fatty liver disease, hypercholesterolaemia, morbid obesity, and chronic back and knee pain. During his evaluation at the outpatient obesity clinic, he had comprehensive preoperative assessment. For hospital bariatric treatments, a multidisciplinary team is required. After reviewing his case, a group of doctors in internal medicine, bariatric surgery, nutrition, psychology, endocrinology, and anaesthesia recommended robotic-assisted sleeve gastrectomy.
