The State Department claimed that Washington’s ambassador to Israel spoke for himself when he stated that he did not believe that an independent Palestinian state was still a US foreign policy objective. Meanwhile, the White House cited previous remarks made by President Donald Trump that expressed scepticism about a two-state solution. When asked if a Palestinian state is still an aim of US policy, US Ambassador Mike Huckabee responded, “I don’t think so,” in an interview with Bloomberg News that was released on Tuesday.
When asked about Huckabee’s words, the White House brought up Trump’s earlier this year suggestion for a US takeover of Gaza, which was denounced as “ethnic cleansing” by the UN, Arab governments, Palestinians, and rights organisations worldwide.
I’m not sure a two-state solution anymore is going to work,” Trump remarked last year, just before he won the 2024 election, according to the White House. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce refused to comment on Tuesday when asked if Huckabee’s comments marked a shift in US policy, stating that Trump and the White House should make policy.
