Meta announced on Thursday a new open-weight AI model it believes matches, and in some cases beats, similar offerings from key Chinese developers. Meta’s chief AI officer Alexandr Wang wrote on X that Muse Spark Open is the most capable US open-weight model to date.

Unlike closed models like Anthropic’s Claude or OpenAI’s ChatGPT, developers can obtain the parameters, or weights, of an open-weight model and configure it. Qwen from Alibaba, Kimi K3 from Moonshot AI and GLM from Z.ai have been regarded as open-weight frontrunners globally, but Meta says its new open model is now at a same level of competition.

“Built for coding and agentic work”, Muse Spark Open “excels at long-horizon tasks, complex software engineering, and multi-step reasoning”, Meta said in a blog post, adding that the new architecture includes “strong safeguards”. Meta also noted that Muse Spark Open is “optimised” to work on Apple’s powerful M5 Ultra CPUs, an uncommon pairing between the two tech giants.

Thanks to efforts with Apple and its new CEO John Ternus, the new model ‘works great on new Mac Studios’, Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg posted on X. “It’s amazing to be able to run a model of the calibre and scale of Muse Spark Open so efficiently, right from your desk,” said Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook as the chief of Apple in September.
