On Friday, Beijing advised the White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia to visit China “more often” after she declared the country did not have “proper toilets” less than a week into her new position. After years of heated rivalry between the United States and China on globally contentious subjects ranging from trade and technology to Taiwan and human rights, the US president’s new spokesperson put the relationship between the two sides into unknown territory.

Zacharia, who lived in China previously and is scheduled to visit the country next month, told an interview that “the feeling was that, in 2016, China was going to pass the US very soon. China’s foreign ministry said on Friday in response that she could want to travel to the country again.”We hope that she can visit China more often when she has the chance,” spokesperson Mao Ning said with a suppressed smile to reporters.

Despite the tense relations, Trump has repeatedly talked of his “great relationship” with China’s President Xi Jinping, whom he has seen twice this year. Zacharia’s comments came just days after what many saw a somewhat awkward debut in front of the White House press corp in which she appeared unable to answer basic questions and at one time referred to her husband as the president.
