Since counting began on September 19, almost 600,000 people have visited the North Port to witness the shark, including roughly half a million during last week’s Chuseok holiday break, or Korean Thanksgiving, according to city officials.
On Tuesday, Busan proclaimed the shark an honorary public relations ambassador after a poll on their official Instagram account gained 91% approval from approximately 8,000 participants.Busan Mayor Chun Jae-soo stated in a statement that Bukangi has inevitably become a new part of Busan’s tale due to the city’s people’s enthusiasm and love for it.
Officials in Busan have welcomed the shark’s attention, which has attracted thousands of tourists and now shares the Korean name for the city’s North Port, where it was first spotted on September 18.
During the four-day Chuseok holiday last weekend, around 480,000 people visited the waterfront park where the shark was stranded, compared to the park’s daily average of around 2,000 visits on weekends, according to a Busan city statement and media reports. The shark, which officials say is roughly 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) long, has become a social media sensation, but getting it back to open ocean has been difficult.
