Uncertainty was increased on Tuesday by conflicting messages from the US and Iran over the state of negotiations to settle their five-month-old conflict, with the most recent attack on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz underlining threats to international oil flows. Iran denied any negotiations were being held or planned, but US President Donald Trump claimed the talks were underway on Monday and warned Tehran of a “last chance” to sign a good agreement.Iran has one last opportunity to sign a quality document.When asked about the status of discussions, Trump told reporters at an Oval Office event, “They are going on right now,” adding that the parties were speaking at the request of Gulf nations and other parties.

The remarks came after Trump decided over the weekend to postpone “massive attacks” on Iran that he claimed he had authorized while negotiations were scheduled, continuing a pattern in which he has promised significant strikes only to postpone them. During what state media characterized as the capture of one of two vessels accused of violations in the Strait of Hormuz, a Revolutionary Guard Navy (IRGC) speedboat approaches the cargo ship Epaminondas.  Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei stated earlier on Monday that there were no planned talks or conversations with the United States.

He stated that Iran had no intention of sending negotiators overseas or hosting foreign delegations in the near future. All Iranian negotiators were present, Baghaei continued, with the exception of Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who was in Iraq for a religious trip. He claimed that discussions with Oman regarding Strait of Hormuz management were the only ones in progress.
