Last year, the South American body CONMEBOL formally proposed to host the 2030 World Cup with 64 participants, giving more nations the chance to participate in the festivities for the competition’s centennial.In a research brief, FIFA stated that it would like to designate an impartial organization to assess the potential effects of increasing the number of participating national teams from 48 to 64, beginning with the 2030 edition.
The accelerated review follows UEFA’s intention to boycott FIFA tournaments and FIFA’s plan to establish a $20 billion company to manage the World Cup and other events with outside investors. The purpose of the analysis is to determine whether the tournament can benefit from the proposed growth or if issues like competitive dilution, calendar congestion, operational complexity, and market saturation exceed the possible advantages.The final recommendation should show if a 64-team competition can produce incremental value and whether that value can be sustained, the letter continued.
FIFA stated that the agency would be chosen on August 14 and would have just four weeks to provide its study by September 11. Morocco, Portugal, and Spain will jointly host the 2030 World Cup, while Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will each host one match to commemorate the competition’s 100th anniversary.
