Hours after the US military claimed to have destroyed an Iranian missile barrage fired on American forces in the Middle East, ending a temporary lull in hostilities, Jordan’s air defense intercepted five missiles fired from Iran early on Wednesday, according to the country’s military. The missiles were “intercepted and destroyed,” according to the Jordanian military. The paramilitary Revolutionary Guard’s Aerospace Force launched ballistic missiles toward the US military’s Central Command headquarters in Jordan and the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, according to a statement released by Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency.
A few hours prior, the US Central Command declared that its troops “remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness” and that they had collaborated with Saudi Arabian forces to target locations in Iraq where militias supported by Tehran had recently launched strikes. Following weeks of escalation over the vital Strait of Hormuz, the Arabian Gulf waterway and small chokepoint through which 20% of the world’s traded oil regularly passes, the United States and Iran had a period of calm during which neither announced assaults for around three days.
At the end of a month filled with numerous pressure points for US President Donald Trump, the conflict erupted. Four US soldiers lost their lives in the combat in recent weeks, and the Pentagon requested funding from an increasingly dubious Congress to pay for the conflict’s skyrocketing expenses.
