A spokesman for the Afghan Taliban administration said on Tuesday that an airstrike by Pakistan on a drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul resulted in at least 400 deaths and 250 injuries, marking a dramatic escalation in the confrontation between the neighbors.

The airstrike occurred just hours after China declared that it was still prepared to keep working to reduce tensions between the Islamic countries of South Asia and encouraged them to refrain from escalating the conflict and return to the negotiating table.

The neighbors share a 2,600-kilometer border, and the fighting that started last month is the worst it has ever been. A few days before the Eid Al Fitr celebration, which marks the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan, it flared up again after a decline amid attempts by friendly nations, such as China, to negotiate and put an end to the fighting.

A single-story building at the location was burned and had flame marks on it. In other locations, buildings were reduced to piles of metal and wood, with only a few bunk beds remaining in some, with bedding, blankets, and personal items scattered around. Witnesses reported hearing three bombs detonate during the hospital’s evening prayers, with two of them hitting patient sections and rooms.
