Under intense pressure from US President Donald Trump, German leader Friedrich Merz rallied officials at a high-level security meeting on Friday and urged for “a new transatlantic partnership” between the US and Europe.
During what Merz and others called a period of “upheaval,” European officials were working to improve ties with Washington, claiming they were bolstering their defences in accordance with Trump’s demands.
Trump’s threats to annex Greenland and his criticism of European nations’ immigration policies have caused tensions between the United States and Europe at the time of this year’s Munich Security Conference.
The agenda will focus on Russia’s war against Ukraine, which is about to enter its fifth year, as well as European NATO countries’ attempts to increase their defence budgets due to worries that Moscow would try to encroach on their territory.
After Trump questioned it and accused members of underfunding defence, European leaders at the meeting defended their security pledges and the NATO alliance. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said the group was “ready to take more responsibility for our own security.
