Bangladesh officially kicked off campaigning on Thursday for its highly anticipated general elections next month, marking the first national vote since the 2024 uprising that ended the long rule of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Thousands of supporters of Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Tarique Rahman filled the streets of the northern city of Sylhet, waving party flags and chanting his name. Rahman, seen as a leading contender for the top job, returned to Bangladesh in December after spending 17 years in exile.

Addressing the crowd, Rahman said the country had been freed from autocratic rule and now needed to focus on restoring people’s rights. He promised to create employment opportunities for millions of unemployed young people and pledged stronger support for women’s economic independence.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party has emerged as a major force in the post-Hasina political landscape, with Rahman positioning himself as a symbol of political change following years of unrest. Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami, the country’s largest Islamist party, launched its own campaign in the capital, Dhaka. The party had been sidelined for much of the past 15 years under Hasina’s government. Jamaat leader Shafiqur Rahman told supporters that his party aimed to fight corruption and build a nation where people of all religions, ethnicities, and communities are treated equally.
