Russia’s President Vladimir Putin will meet with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, with trade and defense relations taking center stage as New Delhi is under intense pressure from the US to cease purchasing Moscow’s oil.
The geopolitical situation following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the difficulties to international trade caused by tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump will also be discussed by both presidents. Putin’s first visit to India since the conflict in Ukraine is scheduled to include significant defense sales and co-production projects, energy purchases, and broader economic involvement. On Thursday, Modi gave Putin a hearty hug on the red carpet at the airport before they drove to a private dinner together.
Putin stated that he was “delighted” to be meeting “my friend” Modi in an interview with India Today.In comments translated by the broadcaster, he stated, “The range of our cooperation with India is huge,” citing space exploration, nuclear energy, and the production of ships and planes. Ashok Malik of the business consultancy The Asia Group told AFP, “This visit is part of India’s diversification strategy, both in terms of strategic and economic, especially at a time when the US tariffs have hurt India.”
Before meeting with Modi on Friday, Putin is scheduled to receive an honour guard at the presidential residence in New Delhi. “Balancing acts” refers to India’s diplomatic balancing act as it depends on crucial Russian oil imports while attempting to avoid upsetting Trump during ongoing tariff negotiations.
