On Wednesday afternoon, flames swiftly raced across the eight high-rises of the Wang Fuk Court housing estate in Tai Po area, turning the crowded complex into a fire.By 10:18 am (0218 GMT) on Friday, the fire was “largely extinguished” after blazing for more than 40 hours, according to the fire services, who declared the conclusion of their efforts.
The bamboo scaffolding and plastic netting that were wrapped around the complex as part of a significant makeover are being examined by authorities as part of their investigation into what caused the fire.An AFP correspondent counted four dead in a 15-minute span while workers at the burned-out apartment buildings searched for survivors and removed bodies in black bags. Another reporter witnessed vehicles unloading bodies at a mortuary in nearby Sha Tin, with family anticipated to come in the afternoon for identification.
Although the precise number of missing persons has not been updated since early Thursday, many others are still unaccounted for.Authorities said on Friday that over 50 patients remained in the hospital, with 12 in critical condition and 28 in serious condition.
