Due to safety concerns over built-in lithium ion batteries, Taiwanese airlines Uni Air, Tiger Air, and Eva Air have prohibited Bluetooth headphones in checked baggage. Because of the automated charging feature, the earphones, including the charging case, are always in “standby mode,” making them portable electronic devices (PED). According to a note on Uni Air’s website, it indicates that it does not comply with the rule requiring PEDs to be fully turned off in checked baggage.
Additionally, Tiger Air stated that earphone charging cases could only be brought on board in hand-held luggage. Media sources state that Eva Air has released similar recommendations. Due of the potential for short circuits and burns, airlines limit devices that include lithium batteries. A recent incident on an Air China flight from Hangzhou to Incheon demonstrated the danger these devices carry.
When a fire broke out in an overhead compartment, the crew raced to put it out; lithium batteries were later found to be the cause. The fear of a mid-air fire was evident even though no one suffered any damage.
