On Thursday, a day after a string of lethal Israeli attacks throughout the enclave rocked the precarious ceasefire in Gaza, Palestinian group Hamas turned over two bodies it said were of slain Israeli hostages. According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, Israeli forces received the two bodies in Gaza through the Red Cross and will bring them into Israel for identification.

Israel withdrew its forces, halted its offensive, and increased aid into the enclave as part of the ceasefire agreement, while Hamas freed all surviving hostages in exchange for almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and wartime detainees.

In addition, Hamas consented to trade 360 Palestinians slain in the conflict for the bodies of all 28 captives. It had turned over 15 bodies as of Thursday. According to Israel, Hamas has been too slow to turn over the bodies of the hostages who are still in Gaza. Finding and recovering all of the remains will take time, according to Hamas.

Some of the hostages’ families are in a desperate attempt to bury their loved ones properly because they worry that their bones would be lost forever beneath Gaza’s wreckage. Amid the massive devastation, thousands of Palestinians who are thought to be killed are still missing.
