United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said the world must not be “intimidated” by Israel or its continued annexation of the occupied West Bank. Speaking to the media at UN headquarters in New York on Friday, Guterres also raised urgent concerns about climate change, warning that global efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels are at risk of “collapsing.
His remarks came ahead of the UN’s high-level annual week, where leaders and representatives from more than 140 countries will gather. According to France, 10 nations are expected to recognize a Palestinian state during the event, despite strong opposition from Israel. Reports suggest that Israel has threatened to annex the West Bank if Western nations move ahead with recognizing Palestine.
The crisis in Gaza is also expected to dominate the week-long summit in Manhattan. A wave of displacement continues, with thousands of Palestinians forced to flee northern Gaza due to ongoing Israeli military operations. Images from the region show families, including women and children, carrying their belongings as they move south after being ordered to evacuate Gaza City. Guterres described the situation in Gaza as “horrendous,” saying it is the worst devastation he has witnessed during his time as UN Secretary-General, and possibly in his lifetime.
