The Oval Office spat with US President Donald Trump last week was “regrettable,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Tuesday, adding that he is prepared to work under Trump’s “strong leadership” to achieve a sustainable peace.
In a social media post on X, hours after the White House announced a halt to military aid to Ukraine that is essential to fending off Russia’s invasion, Zelensky made comments that seemed to be an attempt to appease Trump. He also claimed that Ukraine is prepared to sign a lucrative agreement with Washington on rare-earth minerals and security.
“None of us want an endless war,” the Ukrainian leader stated, seemingly in response to Trump’s claim after Friday’s heated White House meeting that Zelensky does not desire a peace agreement.
“Ukraine is prepared to begin negotiations as soon as feasible to move closer to a permanent peace agreement. The Ukrainians desire peace the most. Under President Trump’s capable leadership, my staff and I are prepared to work toward a lasting peace,” he stated. According to Zelensky, the meeting “did not go how it was supposed to be; things transpired in this manner is unfortunate. Now is the moment to put things right. Future collaboration and communication should be positive.
