The World Health Organisation (WHO) Representative in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Dr. Richard Peeperkorn, expressed gratitude to the United Arab Emirates for its support and cooperation with the organisation in Gaza.
In a video conference with reporters today from Gaza, Dr. Peeperkorn said that the organisation, working with the United Arab Emirates, arranged a medical evacuation from Gaza to Abu Dhabi yesterday, leaving from Ramon Airport in Israel and travelling via the Karam Abu Salam crossing. This was the largest evacuation since October 23, 2023, and it was done to provide advanced medical care.
Dr. Peeperkorn noted that the medical evacuation involved 97 people, 48 of whom were men and 49 of whom were women, and that it was extremely complicated and completed in a very short amount of time. Half of the group had been injured during the Gaza War, and the other half had chronic illnesses. The group included both patients and those with severe injuries. He also mentioned that 155 individuals went with the patients.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also acknowledged the UAE’s assistance in facilitating the sick and injured people’s evacuation from the Gaza Strip so they could get the immediate medical attention they required. “We continue to hope that this and other initiatives will demonstrate what is feasible and lead to the evacuation of more people,” he stated.
