US President Donald Trump has pledged to help end Sudan’s long-running civil war after a request from Saudi Arabia’s crown prince. Previously, Trump had not focused on the conflict, but he condemned the “tremendous atrocities” and said he would now work with regional leaders to help stabilize the situation.

Trump acknowledged that the brutal fighting between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had not been on his radar until Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman urged him to get involved. At a business forum with the Saudi royal, Trump stated, “His majesty would like me to do something compelling regarding Sudan.” He added that the conflict was previously “crazy and out of control” in his view, but he now understood its importance to Saudi Arabia and others.

Sudan’s sovereign council, led by the army chief Abdel Fattah Al Burhan and backed by Saudi Arabia, welcomed the move and expressed willingness to work with both the US and Riyadh. In a statement, the council thanked both countries for their ongoing efforts to end the violence in Sudan.

Global concern over the war has grown since the RSF captured the strategic city of El Fasher in Darfur. The siege has triggered fears of genocide and crimes against humanity, with the United Nations urging the world to pay more attention to the crisis.
