Syria, Asks for end to Israel’s Assaults

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Thursday that the fall of President Bashar Al Assad’s administration has created a “flame of hope” in Syria. However, he warned that substantial difficulties still lie ahead.

He also emphasized that Israel’s numerous strikes on Syrian military installations were “violations” of the country’s sovereignty and demanded that they stop.
“The Middle East is being consumed by many fires, but today, there is a flame of hope in Syria, and that flame must not be extinguished,” according to him.

“The people of Syria stand at the moment of history and the moment of opportunity, and that opportunity cannot be missed.” Following the overthrow of Assad’s regime, Israel launched air strikes against military targets, including the country’s air force, navy, and weapons stores.

“Israel’s extensive air raids continue. “These are violations of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and they must end,” Guterres said ahead of a UN Security Council meeting headed by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Guterres also chastised Israel for moving its military into a UN-managed buffer zone on its border with Syria following Assad’s demise.
