In addition to announcing a response plan that will cost at least $135 million over the next six months, the World Health Organisation called for worldwide cooperation to contain a fresh outbreak of mpox.
In an address to WHO member states on Friday, Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated, Let me be clear: this new mpox outbreak can be controlled and can be stopped.”
Following the pox outbreak in Africa, the WHO declared a global health emergency on August 14. This month, Sweden was the first nation in Europe to report a pox case; Thailand is now the first nation in Asia to confirm an infection.
According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, 10 million vaccinations are required to contain the outbreak. On Thursday, EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides was asked the number of pox vaccinations that EU nations intended to donate by the end of this month. The WHO intends to make a special funding appeal to combat the mpox outbreak available the following week.
Our preliminary estimates indicate that the [Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan] requires about $135 million over the next six months for the acute phase of the outbreak to fund this work and to stop the outbreak as quickly as possible,” Ghebreyesus stated.
