As exit polls from the US election predicted that Donald Trump would win a second term, many Americans were already searching for another departure strategy: relocating overseas.

According to business data, Google searches for “move to Canada” increased 1,270% in the 24 hours following Tuesday’s US East Coast votes. Similar searches for going to Australia increased by 820%, while those for moving to New Zealand increased by about 2,000%.

According to a Google representative, on the US East Coast late Wednesday night, Google searches for emigration were at all-time highs for all three nations. According to Evan Green, managing partner at Green and Spiegel, Canada’s oldest immigration law company, a new email inquiry is received every 30 minutes.

The unexpected fervor for emigration is similar to the desire to relocate overseas following Trump’s election in 2016. However, this time, the Republican’s reelection comes after an especially contentious campaign in which, according to exit polls from Edison Research, almost three-quarters of US voters believed that American democracy was in danger.

In a Reddit group dedicated to those leaving the US, called “r/AmerExit,” hundreds shared suggestions about ideal destinations and tips for getting visas and jobs. Some users said they feared for their country, safety, or both after Trump’s election.
