On Tuesday night, Donald Trump gave a confrontational State of the Union address, hailing what he called an American “turnaround for the ages. At a time when polls show that many Americans are unsatisfied with the current status of the country – and with Trump’s leadership of it – the president showed little indication of a change in course.
Instead, with the midterm elections approaching later this year, he gave a sales pitch to the nation, a patriotic rallying cry to his faithful fans, and taunting to his political opponents. It was a speech full of theatrical flourishes, the type of moments that the former presenter of a reality television program seemed to appreciate.
Early on, he welcomed the US Olympic men’s hockey team to the gallery. They held up their gold medals as Republicans chanted “USA!” and Democrats stood to celebrate. Later, Trump lauded military heroes, including a 100-year-old World War II veteran who got a Medal of Honor and a Coast Guard swimmer who rescued 165 people stranded in last year’s Texas flooding and was awarded the Legion of Merit for Extraordinary Heroism. Although his address lasted 107 minutes, these vignettes sped up the evening and complemented the president’s broader theme of American pride and accomplishment.
