President Donald Trump signed a bill to end the longest federal shutdown in US history, and the US government was scheduled to begin the first tentative steps toward reopening on Thursday. While Republicans and Democrats engaged in a high-stakes blame game, the 43-day funding freeze paralyzed Washington and left hundreds of thousands of workers underpaid.

A Senate-passed bill that would reopen federal departments and agencies was approved by the Republican-led House of Representatives on Wednesday, mostly along party lines. Many Democrats are furious at what they perceive to be a surrender by party leaders.

As he signed the bill later in the Oval Office, Trump attacked Democrats and urged voters to keep the pandemonium in mind when they cast their ballots in the fiercely contested US midterm elections in a year. Trump declared, “Today, we are sending a clear message that we will never give in to extortion,  accompanied by happy Republican members, including Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.

Don’t forget what they’ve done to our nation when the midterm elections and other events approach,” Trump stated. “The federal government will immediately restart regular operations with my signature.
