President Donald Trump has warned that the United States could withdraw all support for Iraq if former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki returns to lead the government. The statement, posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform on Tuesday, reflects deep concern in Washington about Iraq’s political direction and ties with Iran.

Trump described al-Maliki’s potential return as a very bad choice, saying Iraq slipped into “poverty and total chaos” during his previous time in office and arguing that the same outcome should be avoided. He added that if al-Maliki were elected, the United States would no longer help Iraq, suggesting that without U.S. backing the country would have “zero chance of success, prosperity or freedom.

The former prime minister, whose two terms from 2006 to 2014 were marked by growing sectarian tensions and a strained relationship with Washington, has been nominated for the post by Iraq’s dominant Shiite political alliance after recent parliamentary elections. His leadership remains controversial at home and abroad.

Trump’s warning follows similar concerns raised by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a call with Iraq’s current prime minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, and comes amid broader Washington efforts to limit the influence of Iran-aligned groups in Baghdad.
