Though he did not explicitly state that he would not run for a third term, US President Donald Trump on Monday ruled out competing for vice president in the 2028 election, igniting rumors that he would try to prolong his tenure.
Trump has frequently hinted at serving longer than the two terms allowed by the constitution, making jokes about it at rallies and taunting supporters with “Trump 2028” hats. While the majority of constitutional scholars reject the notion, certain friends have taken those signals seriously and have indicated that they are looking into legal or political avenues to make it happen.
One way to get past the ban, according to some supporters, would be for Trump to run as vice president while another candidate ran for president and resigned, allowing Trump to take over as president once more. “I’d be allowed to do that,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One Monday while he was traveling from Malaysia to Tokyo.
