Due to the continued influx of drugs into the US from Mexico and Canada, US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that his proposed 25% tariffs on those countries’ goods will take effect on March 4 as planned.
On same day, Trump also declared he would levy an extra 10% tax on Chinese imports. This seems to be in addition to the 10% tariff he imposed on Chinese goods on February 4. Trump said that drugs, including the lethal painkiller fentanyl, were still entering the US at “very high and unacceptable levels.
In an article on his Truth Social social media platform, Trump stated, “We cannot allow this scourge to continue harming the USA, and therefore, until it stops, or is seriously limited, the proposed TARIFFS scheduled to go into effect on MARCH FOURTH will, in fact, go into effect, as scheduled.” “On that date, China will also be subject to an additional 10% tariff.”
Regarding deadlines for the punitive tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods that Trump has threatened due to the fentanyl problem and US border security, the statement on Wednesday clarified some misunderstandings.
