In a move his office declared would “bury” the concept of a Palestinian state, Israeli far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced that construction will begin on a long-delayed settlement that would split the West Bank and shut it off from East Jerusalem.

Campaign organizations, the Palestinian Authority, and supporters denounced the proposal as unlawful and said that the division of territory would sabotage regional peace initiatives. In response to inquiries on Thursday, a European Commission official stated that the European Union opposes any geographical alteration between Israel and Gaza that is not a component of a political deal.

Although there was no instant confirmation from either, Smotrich, a settler himself, stated Thursday that US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had approved the resuscitation of the E1 construction as he was standing at the location of the proposed colony in Maale Adumim. On the ground, we will respond to anybody attempting to recognize a Palestinian state today. With facts, not with papers, judgments, or declarations.

A stable West Bank keeps Israel secure and is in line with this administration’s goal to achieve peace in the region,” a US State Department official told reporters when asked about his comments. He then directed reporters to the Israeli government for more details.
