The Globe Expo got underway on Sunday, with 160 nations and regions showing their technology, culture, and cuisine. Japan, the host country, hopes to give the globe some much-needed optimism. A Mars meteorite, a pulsing artificial heart made from stem cells, and Hello Kitty toys in the shape of algae are among the highlights of the Osaka event, which runs through mid-October.
The “Grand Ring,” the biggest wooden structure in the world, surrounds most of the pavilions, allowing architects’ imaginations to run wild. On Sunday, the first day of the six-month 2025 Osaka Expo in the city of Osaka, a broad view of the Gundam pavilion behind the “Myaku-Myaku” mascot is displayed. AFP
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said the event will bring a “divided society” closer together. Ishiba told reporters, “We would like to bring the world back together through Expo. A yellow and blue banner atop Ukraine’s pavilion reads, “Not for sale,” mirroring commander Volodymyr Zelensky’s belligerent remarks regarding the war with Russia, which are not present at Expo 2025. We want our resiliency to be more widely known. Tatiana Berezhna, Ukraine’s deputy minister of economy, told AFP, “We are the ones who create, not the ones who destroy.
