Following Israel’s announcement of the initial stages of an operation to occupy Gaza City, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza on Thursday.
While visiting the Tokyo International Conference on African Development in Japan, Guterres stated that an early ceasefire in Gaza is essential “to avoid the death and destruction that a military operation against Gaza City would inevitably cause.
Despite international condemnation of an operation that is sure to compel the evacuation of many more Palestinians, Israel is moving forward with its plan to capture Gaza’s largest metropolitan center, calling up tens of thousands of army reservists. Approximately 75% of the Gaza Strip is currently under Israeli control.
According to Israeli authorities, the war in Gaza started on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants attacked villages in southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and capturing 251 captives, including children, who were then taken into Gaza.
According to the health ministry of the enclave, Israel’s military campaign in the Gaza Strip has killed at least 60,000 Palestinians. Guterres demanded that the prisoners held by Hamas be released unconditionally. Additionally, he called on Israel to change its mind about expanding “illegal” settlement construction in the West Bank.
