The most recent wave of hostage releases in Gaza and the ongoing enforcement of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas have been praised by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. A day after the release of three Israeli hostages from Gaza, the UN issued a note to media journalists on Sunday offering 369 Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons in return. The exchange is a component of the initial stage of a ceasefire agreement between the two parties that went into effect on January 19.

Phase one of the three-phase agreement calls for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from populous areas of Gaza, the return of Palestinians to their neighbourhoods, and a major expansion of the amount of assistance supplies permitted into the occupied territory.

Phase one, which is scheduled to be finished on March 1st, has gone mostly as planned despite the tensions. Negotiations on the following phase, which entails a lasting truce between the two sides, ought to start after that date.

According to the document, the UN is still fully committed to enabling the agreement be implemented, notably by assisting in the delivery of vital humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza. Guterres restates his demand that all sides respect international human rights and humanitarian law.
